The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has unveiled a National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System to tackle Nigeria’s addressing challenges, improve deliveries and support the growth of e-commerce and other businesses.

The Postmaster General of the Federation/CEO, NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi, disclosed this in her goodwill message marking World Post Day 2026, themed “One Postal Network, Infinite Possibilities.”

Launched on October 1, 2026, the system gives every addressable building in Nigeria, including homes, shops, farms, schools and offices, a unique geospatial identity. According to Odeyemi, it will help courier companies locate destinations, improve emergency response, support access to credit and strengthen public planning.

She said NIPOST was also strengthening its logistics operations, investing in technology and partnering with other organisations to provide affordable and reliable delivery services for small businesses, farmers, artisans and online traders. She cited the example of products made in Aba reaching buyers in Sokoto as part of the agency’s vision for a more efficient nationwide delivery network.

Odeyemi added that NIPOST was transforming its post offices into service centres where Nigerians could access logistics, government services, digital tools and financial services closer to their communities.

She described the reforms as part of efforts to reposition NIPOST beyond traditional letter delivery and make it a key player in logistics, e-commerce, digital services and financial inclusion.

The PMG expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, for their support towards Nigeria’s digital transformation and the launch of the national postcode infrastructure.

She also disclosed that NIPOST received more than 3,109 entries from secondary schools nationwide for the 2026 Universal Postal Union Letter-Writing Competition, organised as part of activities marking World Post Day.

Olusanwo Precious Oluwasemilore of Iganmode Grammar School, Ota, Ogun State, emerged the national winner. Diyal Fatima Satzen Sulaiman of St. Louis College, Jos, and Muhammad Zainab of St. Louis Secondary School, Kano, jointly came second, while Kwapten Nitninaan Pamela of St. Louis College, Jos, and Oyelami Oluwanifemi Diamond of Hallmark Secondary School, Ondo State, jointly took third place.

Odeyemi said the agency’s vision was to build a modern, efficient, customer-focused and digitally enabled postal service that connects communities, businesses and government, creating opportunities for trade, entrepreneurship, innovation, job creation and national development.
